My Stories

After looking into other papers of the local area and comparing the stories in these papers to national papers, I was able to decide and create what stories I felt would be most suited to my paper.

From looking into national papers I was able to see that they had a wider range of stories to cover as they needed to address a wider audience of people of different ages, cities and interests which effected the type of stories chosen, and therefore their were many stories that were less factual and could be seen as more gossip.
This differs from that to stories in a lcoal newspaper as there is a smaller audience to reachout to, all of which are from the same town so therefore share that common interest, which in turn gives them the incentive to buy the newspaper.
I chose to create my main story on a sporting event, which looks into the great achievement of a girl from the local area in Bowls. I decided on this story to be my focus on the front cover, and on the second page of my paper as I had seen a similar layout to this in 'The Evening Post' on a raft race event covereing both pages. I felt that as the story was based on a great achievement of someone in the town, and it was and achievement in an unusual sport for the younger generation, that it would appeal to a variety of people in the town and would therefore increase sales of the paper.

I chose to write my second story on a halloween themed event, the title of the story being 'UN-EGGCEPTABLE' relating to vadalism and aggression from teenagers on holloween. I felt that through usuign the pun 'Uneggceptable' I would be able to catch readers attention to the matter of disruptive youths. I also found that in may national and local stories there are many concerns with teenagers behaviour and that they have a negative stigma, so through conforming to this stigma I feel as though I woule attract my audience as they would be intersted in protectinghtemselves, their families and interested in stopping vadalism.

I also chose to use two christmas themed stories on the Portishead christmas lights and one on a christmas card competition, I did this to add a family feeling to the paper and to give a sense of community to the paper as they are local events that include everyone in the town and would therfore help to build community spirit.

One of my feature stories I chose to be based on the 'Council Crisis' I did this in order to add a more intelectual story, that used local politics to give the paper a more factual view. I felt that it was also a good source to keep the audience conncected with the areas events and problems.
